Understanding The Dental Implant Process
When you make the decision to get dental implants, you are starting down the path to smile happily. There is a roadmap to follow in which we develop a long-term plan to complete the process with fewer complications. The dental implants procedure is broken down into a few basic steps so you know what to expect.
The whole process takes a few months but it depends on the individual patient. It takes this long to ensure the implants properly integrate with the jawbone and gum tissue.
Step 01: Consultation
During this step, we figure out if dental implants are the right choice for you. We evaluate your dental health which includes an examination of your gums and jawbone. There are cases where we would need to perform grafting or augmentation surgery to build gum tissue or bone density.
Step 02: Implant Placement
The next step is the implant surgery. Implants will be anchored in the jawbone and gum tissue. You’ll also be given instructions for proper postoperative care.
Step 03: Healing
The healing and recovering period is when the implants fuse to your bone (osseointegration) and tissue. You’ll be up and on your feet right after the surgery but this crucial step takes around 3 to 6 months for most people. There are cases when it could take up to a year.
When the implants finally fuse to the bone, you’ll be ready get your dental restorations fitted. Osseointegration, fusing the implants to the bone, must be allowed to happen at its own pace.
Step 04: Dental Restoration
Once the implants are properly fused to your bone, you’ll be fitted for your permanent dental restoration. Your restorations will be tailored to look natural, blending seamlessly with your existing teeth.
