Frequently Asked Questions
If I’m not having any dental pain, do I still need to go to the dentist?
Yes–biannual appointments are necessary so that we can perform professional cleanings and checkups. We’ll examine your oral health and take x-rays of your mouth to ensure you’re free of tooth decay and infection. X-rays can show cavities years before symptoms will arise and it’s good to be aware of underlying issues so we can treat them before they become problematic.
During these appointments, we’ll also complete an oral cancer screening. If caught early on, the chances of successful oral cancer treatment are much higher. During the professional cleaning, we’ll use special tools to scale off any plaque and tartar that have built up over time and we’ll also let you know about ways that you can improve your oral care routine at home.
We’ll always provide you with detailed information on the status of your oral health and answer any questions you may have.
What is a cavity?
A cavity, also known as tooth decay, is a small hole in your tooth. It’s caused by a buildup of bacteria that creates plaque. If plaque isn’t brushed away, it can lead to tartar, which is much more challenging to remove on your own. Tartar attracts even more bacteria, which leads to decay. In addition to seeing a small hole on your tooth, there are other signs that may indicate that you have a cavity, including:
- Brown, black or white staining on the surface of your tooth
- Tooth sensitivity
- Tooth pain
- Pain while chewing
- Sharp pain when your tooth comes into contact with something sweet
Cavities can be prevented by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing between meals. However, once you have a cavity, you’ll need to see a dentist to get a filling and prevent further issues.
Am I a candidate for dental implants?
To determine if you’re a candidate for dental implants, it’s best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Klym by contacting our Traverse City office by calling (231) 947-7202 or our Petoskey office at (231) 347-2188. During the consultation, he’ll examine your oral health and provide a customized treatment plan to meet your needs.
The best candidates are in good overall health and have sufficient bone density. Women who are pregnant and smokers may not be eligible. Dr. Klym may recommend supplemental procedures prior to receiving dental implants to ensure the treatment is successful. He’ll provide you this information during the consultation.
We want your smile to make you feel confident and comfortable. If you suffer from tooth loss, give us a call and we’ll help you find the treatment that’s best for you.
