First, the basic 'topography' of the tooth and endodontic therapy. Root canals are performed to remedy the conditions associated with disease or damage to the inner tooth, where the pulp tissue resides. The pulp contains nerve fibers and other elements like veins, lymph vessels, arteries and connective tissue.
